What is Benzene? Why is there any of it in your shampoo?

Benzene is a carbohydrate material which can be produced by either natural or artificial means. Every day, people all over the world are exposed to it from a variety of indoor and outdoor sources. It is classified as a human carcinogen. We do not intentionally add benzene to our products. Although it may be found in trace amounts owing to its natural presence in certain raw materials.

Consequently, Unilever worked with its propellant suppliers to resolve the issue after an internal investigation identified the propellant as the source.

An independent health hazard evaluation found no health risk from the level of benzene found in Unilever’s dry shampoo. However, Unilever is recalling the products as a precautionary measure.
